| Cocoon China Returns (DE) |
![]() Friday, October 12 marks the return to Shanghai of the acclaimed German electronic dance music outfit Cocoon Recordings. This is the second installment of the Cocoon China residency launched by the organization's founder Sven Vath and labelmate Loco Dice earlier this July. This time, veteran DJ Frank Lorber is on hand to ensure the Cocoon China party goes off as it would if it were in any of the other global Cocoon residencies such as London, Madrid, or Ibiza. Lorber is resident at the flagship CocoonClub in Frankfurt, birthplace and heaquarters of Cocoon. He held fort Saturdays at famed Frankfurt club Omen in the early 90s and regularly spins events in London and Ibiza. Frank Lorber, born in Giessen, now lives in the small metropolis of Frankfurt. He began spinning records at a very young age, making his public debut at age 16 in a Giessen club called "Gonzo's". From these humble beginnings Lorber's DJ career rapidly took root and began to flourish. In 1992 Lorber took up residency at the legendary "Omen" club in Frankfurt. Together with DJ Dag, Lorber made Saturdays at Omen simply unforgettable. News of Frank Lorber's success at Omen traveled fast. In 1993 he got his first international gig at UK in London which was followed by many radio broadcasts such as HR 3 Clubnight, Kiss FM Berlin, Stuttgart, Saarbrücken, and London. In 94 the Lorber focused attention on production. Together with Pascal F.E.O.S. Frank dropped his first two releases on the debut singles from "Explizit Records". Co-operation with the head of Frankfurt's Delirium Records, Jörg Henze, created the project known as "Electronic Home Entertainment" in 1996. Continuing to work in co-operation with other producers, Frank Lorber got together with Toni Rios to start his first label known as "Attention Records". Two years later, in 1999, Johannes Heil and Frank Lorber created "Projekt 69". More recently, Lorber went on to start his own minimal techno label "nummer schallplatten" which has a number of successful releases to date. His full-length “Jailhouse Rocker” CD drew critical and dance floor acclaim and he was soon after recording a mix CD “Frank Lorber: In The Mix” for Sven Vath’s label Cocoon Recordings. Bonbon Sven Vath created Cocoon in 2002 and what started as a small, alternative music party now extends into permanent clubs in Germany, a seasonal club in Ibiza, a record label and 2 restaurants. At the heart of Cocoon is the concept of minimalism -- The stripping down of anything to its barest of essential elements. It is a theme that binds all elements of Cocoon together. Cocoon is now an integrated organization that includes a record label with tier 1 acts such as Funk d'Void and Ricardo Villalobos; a booking agency representing some of the industry's heaviest hitters; self-named residencies and tours in Ibiza and other world-class party destinations; a couple of restaurants and a brand new, state-of-the-art club in Vath’s hometown Frankfurt. Cocoon events all around Europe are characterized by impeccable production quality, music direction and the loyal yet crazy fans whom Vath affectionately refers to as freaks. The most intense parties are held in Ibiza and the latest Cocoon Ibiza 2xCDs are befittingly entitled freakshow: the Cocoon Ibiza Summer Mix (see below for details on how to win FREE freakshow CDs and T-Shirts). The origins of Cocoon trace back to the late 90s when Vath held a regular club night of the same name. The night was mainly electronic and avant-garde but Vath's depth of music knowledge stretches into much broader areas having roots in rock, industrial, new wave, and dub. The influence of Vath’s in-depth knowledge is felt at all Cocoon events as his musical direction largely determines the sound and vibe that a Cocoon party delivers. With this second visit to Shanghai and more on the horizon, Cocoon continue to grow and expand outside of Europe making the Cocoon China residency at bonbon a stronghold for seasoned freaks as well as new minimal techno enthusiasts.
